Tongyu Wu

Tongyu Wu is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Zhejiang University. Her research lies at the intersection of labor, information technology, gender, and global development.

She is currently pursuing two interrelated lines of research. The first examines how technological change, capital, and the state interact to reshape the future of work, with a particular focus on the AI industry and AI data annotation work. Her related research has appeared in journals such as New Media and Society and Big Data and Society.

Her second line of research offers a comparative study of technology industries in the United States and China, examining how divergent political-economic systems and digital cultures shape the organization of tech work. Her first book, Play to Submission: Gaming Capitalism in a Tech Firm, published by Temple University Press in 2024, belongs to this line of inquiry.
